The way he pauses before Odinson, and looks at Thor after, breaks my heart.

He was warning him to be braced because he expected to die, whether he shows that or not in the actual confrontation.  He expected to die and whether it was for a kamikaze mission or because he has a bigger plan in mind and knows Thor must suffer through losing him again, remains to be seen. 

But Loki wanted Thor to be braced. Loki, who is keenly aware of the pain of loss.  “You’ll never be ready” he told Thor of Jane’s mortality. He was also talking about himself.  

Embedded in Loki’s ultimate sacrifice, then, is another, subtler act of love, toward his brother.
